Whitewater Paddling

The traditional whitewater section of the creek runs from N. Main St. or Rte. 93 downstream roughly 5 miles to Hollow Rd. The difficulty of the rapids range from Class 2 to Class 3-. As is typical for most streams and rivers, in high water as the river bank becomes flooded paddling can be extremely dangerous.

The water in this creek section is a funky turquoise color due to AMD (acid mine drainage) pollution. The Jeddo Tunnel drains much of the Hazleton coal mining region and discharges into the Little Nescopeck Creek and then into the Nescopeck Creek just upstream from the Rte 93 bridge. The color is due to high concentrations of aluminum and manganese and to a lesser degree iron.

Despite the water color, the creek is quite pretty with hemlock and rhododendron lined stream banks and the gorge feels quite isolated.
