Edgewood Vernal Pools

Vernal pools or ephemeral/fluctuating natural pool communities are seasonal wetlands that fill from precipitation, surface water runoff, and rising groundwater in the fall or spring.  By the summertime these pools are usually dry due to evaporation.  These fishless pools provide prime habitat for frogs, salamanders, toads, shrimp and insects.  The water lasts long enough for eggs to hatch and develop into a stage of life that no longer requires an aquatic environment.

See page 24 or 76 for the Edgewood vernal pools description.
